Animation for creature production
Creature performance that reads as alive
Mimic Productions creates 3D animation for creatures that need convincing movement, character and timing. Working from our Berlin studio, we support projects across film, games and VFX with body animation, facial animation, mocap clean-up and keyframe work, shaped to the creative and technical needs of each production. For creature work, the challenge is rarely just motion. A believable result depends on posture, weight shift, eye focus, reaction timing and the way a body responds to its environment. Our animators work on movement that can be subtle or highly physical, from grounded creature walks to swimming, flying, handling objects and other performance-heavy actions. We also refine facial detail so expressions, breaths and small shifts in attention hold up in close-up. Projects can call for fully handcrafted animation, help with raw motion capture data, or a mixed workflow that balances both. Where a production needs immediacy, we also offer real-time facial animation for live applications such as immersive experiences, digital communication and interactive storytelling. The aim is practical: to deliver production-ready creature animation that fits the rig, the shot, the pipeline and the intended audience. Because creature design often sits between imagination and anatomy, our approach is careful and collaborative. We study the movement requirements of the character, the intended world, and how the asset will be used in final delivery.
Production challenges
What creature animation teams usually need
Creature productions often have to solve these issues at the same time.
01
Movement that feels grounded
A creature can be expressive and imaginative, but the motion still needs believable weight, timing and continuity across shots, especially when the design includes unusual proportions, limbs or anatomy.
03
Delivery for different platforms
The same character may need work for a cinematic sequence, a game asset or a live real-time setup. Each output has different rig, performance and technical constraints that must be respected.
02
Clean performance from mixed sources
Motion capture often needs cleanup before it can support a creature shot. Productions also need keyframe polish, finger articulation and facial refinement when the source data does not fully match the final requirement.
What your team gets
How we support the production
01
Body and face in one pipeline
We handle creature body performance and facial detail together so the final motion stays coherent.
02
Mocap clean-up
Raw capture data is refined into animation that is ready for production use.
03
Keyframe flexibility
When the shot needs more control, we can build movement by hand.
04
Real-time options
For live experiences, we can guide the facial animation setup and execution.

Production approach
Built for creature shots, not generic motion

Creature animation asks for more than clean movement. It needs a sense of intent, anatomy and visual logic, especially when the design is stylised or physically unusual. Our work covers the full range from subtle gesture to large-scale action, including handling, flying, swimming and other performance-led movement. We also refine facial performance and micro-expression so the character feels present rather than mechanically driven.
When a production brings us raw capture, we can clean and polish the data before it reaches final use. When a scene needs something more controlled, we can animate by hand and shape the performance around the shot. For live-facing work, we can also support real-time facial animation workflows and help clients through the technical setup, pipeline development and on-site execution.
Share a storyboard or action list, character references and the intended duration of each sequence. Establish review stages for blocking, timing and final polish so changes can be discussed while the movement is still straightforward to adjust. For creatures, provide anatomy, silhouette and movement references, including how the design should behave in close-up and full-body views.

How we work
Typical production flow
01
Review the brief
We assess the creature design, intended use, rig state and delivery format to understand what the animation must achieve.
02
Plan the performance
We define the motion approach, whether that means mocap cleanup, keyframe animation, facial work or a mixed pipeline.
03
Animate and refine
Our animators build the creature action, then adjust timing, expression and interaction until it supports the shot.
04
Prepare for handoff
We deliver work ready for the wider production pipeline, with real-time guidance where live execution is part of the brief.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can you work on both realistic and stylised creatures?
Yes. The creature source material shows work aimed at both photorealistic and stylised outcomes. We shape the animation around the design language of the asset, the production context and the way the character is meant to move on screen, rather than forcing one fixed animation style onto every project.
Do you only work from motion capture?
No. Our 3D animation services include mocap clean-up as well as keyframe animation. That means we can refine captured movement when there is usable source data, or create the performance by hand when the shot needs more control, nuance or a more imaginative motion language.
What kind of creature movement can you support?
The service includes a broad range of body animation, from subtle gestures to highly complex actions. Source examples include swimming, flying, dancing and intricate object interaction, plus finger articulation. That makes it suitable for creature shots where the performance has to carry more than simple locomotion.
Can you help with facial detail on a creature asset?
Yes. Facial animation is part of the service, including facial mocap clean-up and micro-expression refinement. We pay attention to details such as eye movement, breath, swallow and other small shifts that help the creature feel present in close-up and avoid a flat or over-smoothed result.
Do you offer real-time work for live experiences?
Yes, real-time facial animation is available for projects that need immediate performance capture applied to a 3D model. Our work includes support for technical setup, development pipeline and on-site execution for live concerts, immersive installations, corporate showcases and digital communication, subject to the needs of the project.
How do you hand over animation to the rest of the production team?
The goal is production-ready delivery. We work to the needs of the rig, shot and pipeline so the animation can move smoothly into the next stage. If a production needs live setup support, we can also help guide the technical side rather than treating animation as a standalone asset.
