Character rigging for VFX
Rigging that gives VFX characters believable performance
For VFX productions, rigging is not a finishing touch. It is the technical base that allows a digital character to move, react and hold up under close scrutiny. Mimic Productions builds facial and body rigs for realistic humans, stylised heroes, creatures and digital doubles, with a pipeline shaped by film and performance capture work. Our facial rigging is a particular strength. We create optimised foundations for realistic facial animation, including blend-shape based rigs built from actor expression scans when a production needs a highly specific performance range. That can support subtle dialogue work, broader emotional beats, or a character that must sit comfortably beside live action photography. For body work, we design rigs that can handle demanding poses while preserving anatomical logic, which is important when a shot needs both motion and believability. For VFX teams, the practical questions are usually about scope and integration. What level of facial detail is needed for the shot distance? How many expressions are essential? Does the character need to work for offline film animation, real-time review, or both? Mimic can advise on the minimum rig complexity needed to support the performance without adding unnecessary cost or production weight. We also build with handoff in mind. Our rigging services can be aligned with animation, motion capture and game-engine delivery, including Unreal and Unity where required. That means the rig is not only expressive, but usable by the wider production team.
Production challenges
What VFX teams need from a character rig
These are the most common rigging pressures we help production teams manage.
01
Facial detail under camera scrutiny
Close-up VFX shots demand more than motion. The rig must support natural expressions, clean deformation and enough control for fine performance work without becoming brittle or overcomplicated.
03
Pipeline fit and handoff
A rig only helps if the downstream team can use it. We plan for animation, review and integration needs early so the asset is practical for your production setup.
02
Bodies that can hold extreme poses
Creature action, stunt work and stylised movement can push a rig hard. We build body systems to preserve proportion, anatomy and control through demanding animation ranges.
What your team gets
Why productions choose our rigging support
01
Facial rigs built for performance
Blend-shape facial systems can be tailored to the expression range your shot list actually needs.
02
Body controls with production logic
We balance flexibility and stability so animators can work without fighting the rig.
03
Scalable rig complexity
From essential control sets to film-quality facial detail, we shape the setup to the brief.
04
Cross-department readiness
Rigs can be prepared for animation, performance capture and real-time use where required.

Production approach
Built for shots, not just assets

In VFX, rigging has to serve the shot schedule as much as the character design. A beautiful model is not enough if the animator cannot get reliable results, or if the face falls apart once the camera moves in. Mimic Productions builds rigs to keep the character usable across the production workflow, from performance planning through to animation and review.
For facial work, we can create blend-shape based rigs from actor expression scans and add wrinkle maps where they help the performance read more clearly. For bodies, we build systems for humans, animals and creatures that need to move convincingly in demanding scenes. When the project needs it, we can also shape the rig for real-time engines, giving VFX teams a usable base for previz, iteration or final delivery depending on the brief.
Supply the model, expected range of movement and examples of expressions or poses. Review deformation at demanding positions, then agree controls, naming and the handoff to the animation team before the rig is used across a larger sequence. For film and visual-effects work, include shot references and the relationship between digital characters and live-action footage.

How we work
How we approach a rigging brief
01
Define performance needs
We review the character, shot context and delivery target to understand whether the rig must prioritise facial nuance, body range, real-time use or a mix of all three.
02
Shape the control strategy
We decide on the most useful rig structure, including blend-shape coverage, body controls and any wrinkle map support needed to keep the character expressive and manageable.
03
Build and test in context
The rig is developed and checked against expected animation demands so issues can be addressed before handoff becomes a bottleneck for the production team.
04
Prepare for downstream use
We package the asset for the intended workflow, whether that means film animation, VFX review, performance capture support or engine-based delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Do you only rig realistic human characters?
No. We build facial and body rigs for humans, animals and mythical or fantastical creatures as well. The rig structure is shaped by the performance requirements, camera distance and production use case rather than by character type alone.
Can you keep the facial rig simpler if the budget is limited?
Yes. Mimic can customise the facial setup and advise on the blend-shapes that matter most. If the shot requirements do not call for a full film-level build, we can focus on the controls that deliver the best visible result without unnecessary overhead.
Do you provide both facial and body rigging?
Yes. Facial rigging and body rigging are both core parts of our service. Many VFX productions need the two to work together so the character reads as one coherent performance, especially when facial acting and physical motion must match in the same shot.
Can the rig be used for real-time work?
Where the project calls for it, we can optimise character rigging for game engines such as Unreal and Unity. That is useful for teams that need real-time review, engine-based production or an asset that has to move between film and interactive workflows.
How does rigging relate to motion capture?
Rigging provides the structure that mocap and animation need to drive. We also offer advanced motion capture solutions, so if your VFX workflow includes performance capture, the rig can be planned with that source data and handoff in mind.
Can you work with our existing VFX pipeline?
Yes. Our VFX source describes an adaptable workflow that can relocate to a client shoot location or work from the Berlin studio. For rigging, that means we can plan the asset with your production process, team roles and downstream delivery requirements in mind.
