The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience - Motion Capture & 3D Scanning
It was an extraordinary honor to collaborate with Epic Games and visionary director Lana Wachowski on the cinematic elements of this groundbreaking technical demonstration. By facilitating the Motion Capture, Facial Capture, and 3D Scanning for the project's narrative trailer sequences, we helped bridge the gap between cinematic storytelling and supporting the creation of hyper-realistic digital humans.
Overview
It was a genuine privilege to welcome iconic Artists and Performers Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss to our studio to capture the performances for the cinematic intro of The Matrix Awakens. Conceptualized by Lana Wachowski, these specific sequences, including the iconic "White Room" monologue and the high-speed car chase dialogue, were designed to blur the lines between reality and the virtual world.
Supporting Epic Games in these narrative moments was a highlight for our team. We focused on capturing the data needed to drive the digital performances during these cinematic scenes, ensuring a seamless transition for the player as the experience shifted from our captured narrative into the interactive open-world gameplay.

Project Experience

Capturing the Meta-Narrative:
The "White Room" sequence required precise technical execution, and it was exciting to utilize our Motion Capture systems to secure the data needed for this surreal, meta-commentary scene within The Matrix Awakens.
Honoring the Legacy:
Working alongside Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for the car driving sequences was an inspiring process, where our Facial Capture technology served to translate their familiar chemistry and subtle expressions into the digital engine.

Cinematic Fidelity:
Witnessing our captured data brought to life in the final cinematic trailer demonstrated the power of Unreal Engine 5, creating a visual standard where the 3D Scanning assets and performance data became indistinguishable from live-action footage.
Mimic’s Contribution
Motion Capture
We managed the performance capture for the specific gaming cinematic sequences, including the "White Room" and car interior scenes, recording the physical movements required to drive the narrative intro of the experience.
Facial Capture
Our team employed facial tracking to capture the dialogue and emotive nuances of the Artists during the cinematic trailer, ensuring the digital doubles conveyed the necessary realism before the transition to gameplay.
3D Scanning
We facilitated high-resolution scanning sessions to capture the precise geometry and textures required to recreate the photorealistic likenesses of the Artists used in these cinematic moments.
