Mimic Productions provided specialized digital asset services for Lady Gaga's "Chromatica Ball" tour, collaborating with producer Tom Wandrag and creative director Nick Knight. Our team was responsible for the retopology and rigging of two digital version of gaga, enabling the integration of motion capture to bring these unique digital avatars to life for the tour visuals.
Overview
For Lady Gaga's "Chromatica Ball" tour, Mimic Productions collaborated in the production of the tour's visual content. Working under the creative direction of the legendary Nick Knight, our team was tasked with preparing 3D sculpture and scans for animation. This involved a detailed process of retopology and rigging, which was essential for translating Lady Gaga's motion capture performance onto the digital assets. Our work ensured that the artistic integrity of Knight's sculpture was maintained while allowing for the dynamic movement required for a global stadium tour.
Campaign Experience
The "Lady Gaga Chromatica Ball" project required a high level of technical precision to fuse the art of a 3D sculpture with the performance of a real artist. Our specialized services in retopology and rigging were critical for creating a clean, animation-ready mesh that could accurately carry the captured motion data, thereby preserving Lady Gaga's unique movements.
The Animation Retargeting service provided by Mimic Productions was crucial for refining the motion capture data after it was applied to the digital sculpture. This meticulous process smoothed out any imperfections and ensured that the final animation was perfectly aligned with the cinematic quality of the tour visuals.

Retopology
Mimic Productions performed high-end retopology on the 3D sculpture, a white one and a golden one with a piano. This process involved rebuilding the mesh to be efficient for rigging and animation, creating a clean topological structure that could handle complex deformations.
Rigging
Our team created a custom rig for sculpture. This rigging process involved setting up a digital skeleton and controls, allowing the motion capture data to be accurately transferred and controlled, which was vital for the fluid animation of the sculpture.
Animation Retargeting
To ensure the highest quality animation transfer, our team performed a detailed retargeting process — aligning Lady Gaga’s captured performance data with the rigged digital sculpture. This stage involved preparing and optimizing all animation assets for precise joint mapping and motion translation. Every adjustment was carefully made to achieve technically accurate deformation and minimize post-transfer clean-up, resulting in a seamless, natural performance that preserved the unique nuances of Lady Gaga’s movements.
