KIKI: Virtual Human Sign Language Interpreter - Character Creation & Animation

It was an incredible honor to collaborate with NHK Enterprises and NHK G-Media on the development of KIKI, a groundbreaking Virtual Human designed for sign language interpretation. By combining advanced Character Creation with nuanced performance capture, we aimed to support a more inclusive society through the power of digital technology.

Overview

Collaborating on the KIKI project was a highlight for our team, as it allowed us to use our Character Creation expertise for a deeply meaningful purpose. KIKI is a Virtual Human designed to bridge the gap between the hearing and non-hearing communities by providing accessible sign language interpretation across various digital platforms.

Building upon our sophisticated character development pipeline, this project involved a complex transition from initial sketches to a fully realized 3D asset. Supporting the client's vision involved meticulous Modeling and Rigging that needed to match existing technical libraries while ensuring KIKI could convey the "joy of life" through fluid, expressive movements. It was a privilege to help realize a vision where Sign Language Interpretation is seamlessly integrated into everyday life.

Project Experience

The technical process for the KIKI: Virtual Human Interpreter project involved complex Rigging and Modeling specifically engineered to accurately support the fluid hand shapes required for sign language.

Working alongside the creative team to define KIKI’s personality allowed us to use Facial Animation and detailed Grooming to ensure the Artist/Performer's performance was both clear and emotionally engaging.

The final impact of the KIKI: Virtual Human Interpreter project is a testament to how Character Creation and photorealistic Shading can foster inclusivity, providing a bridge between worlds for a brighter future.

Mimic’s Contribution

Character Creation & Modeling:

We focused on crafting a relatable and photorealistic Virtual Human from initial sketches, ensuring the 3D model honored the artistic intent while being prepared for high-end digital environments.

Complex Rigging & Integration:

Our team developed a bespoke rigging solution that allowed KIKI to perform intricate movements naturally while remaining fully compatible with the client’s established technical ecosystem.

Grooming, Clothing & Rendering:

By meticulously crafting the hair, clothing, and skin textures, we supported the narrative of the character through realistic material response and high-fidelity rendering.
