3D Scanning is the perfect solution when re-creating photo-real characters in the digital realm. Our system combines the best technology for the capture of high resolution topology, as well as extremely detailed texture maps. We are also honoured to have conducted facial scans for many celebrities across the globe - from Cristiano Ronaldo, to Roger Federer and Marina Abramovic. Our portable system enables us to travel to any location, prioritizing our clients production schedules, without sacrificing excellent quality.
FACIAL EXPRESSION SCANNING
We also offer 3D Facial Scanning for the re-production of highly realistic and organic
blend-shapes for your facial rig. To accurately capture the unique details of an individual's expressions is at the heart of a convincing 3D animation. Our founder has personally directed world renowned talent such as Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins, capturing their unique facial dynamics - so you can trust you are in good hands!
Mimic offers full body scanning services in Berlin as well as on location. This service is ideal for Digital Double creation or for 3D Printing.
If you have a RAW 3D scan which you would like to use for animation purposes, we can also offer re-topology services. This will reduce the number of polygons in your scan, whilst retaining high detail topology, and resulting in an "animation-ready" 3D model.

REALISTIC SKIN TEXTURES
The skin texture is the most immediate and essential component which can truly characterize a believably "living, breathing, organic" 3D character. The accurate creation of details such as pore definition, sweat and natural blemishes are at the heart of realism in 3D, and it is this artistry which we have refined over the years at Mimic. Our services include the full development of realistic skin textures both with, and without, the use of a 3D scanner, which means our clients can expect realism in a fictional (or even deceased) 3D creation.
Our capacity to produce textures completely from scratch, also lends itself to enhancements of a character - which can include aspects such as ageing or de-ageing, and additional facial hair or scars. We have recently developed the fully-textured 3D models of over 35 human characters for a sports game, so you can be assured that not only have our artists gained the creative skills in texture production, but they have also developed innovative new tools, ensuring that our clients receive the best quality, with the most efficient time-line.

3D TEXTURE MAPS
3D Textures are essentially made up of a series of flat images, called “Maps”
which when layered and “wrapped” around the model create a 3D textural effect.
Some Texture Maps include:
- Normal Maps – Creates light reflections on the model based on geometry
- Displacement Maps – Creates folds and wrinkles on the skin which cannot be achieved by the existing geometry
- Diffuse (Colour) Maps – Creates colour toning on the surface of the model
- And many more…
We currently work with normal maps, displacement maps, specular maps, gloss maps, depth maps and ambient maps. We can advise you as to which maps will be necessary for your character depending on your aesthetic goals and technical requirements.
FACIAL + BODY RIGGING
We believe the facial rig is fundamental to producing a realistic and organic animated character, and fortunately we are also proud to state that Facial Rig development is Mimic's greatest strength! Utilizing the experience gained by our Founder and CTO, David Bennett, who managed the Facial Animation team for huge blockbusters such as Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Tin Tin, we have produce a rigging pipeline which is second to none.
BLEND-SHAPE FACIAL RIGGING
It is through the facial rigging process, that the unique quirks and distinctly human characteristics of a character are captured.
For the highest quality animation, we build Blend-Shape Facial Rigs based off actor Expression Scans - this pipeline creates the most realistic and personalized rigs available today.
Blend-Shape based rigs are when an actor's poses and expressions are modeled or scanned, and the data is captured within the facial rig. From there, the Blend-Shapes and expressions are activated and "blended" by the animator, creating the most authentic 3D facial expressions available.
This aspect of the animation process is to identify the motion your chosen actor is making, and then compose each expression using multiple blend shapes (facial poses) composed together to make up a unique and detailed expression.
Blend-Shape Face Rigs can feature anywhere from 30 (low-quality) to 300 (film-quality) Blend-Shapes , and this number is reflected directly in the total fee. So if you are working with a limited budget, we would be happy to review your performance and advise on the most essential Blend-Shapes we believe your character will require. We can then build a custom Blend-Shape rig to cater to your financial needs, without sacrificing realism and accuracy.

BONE-BASED FACIAL RIGGING
Mimic specializes in the creation of Blend-Shape Facial Rigs, as well as basic Bone-Based Facial Rigs (and everything in-between). Whatever your project requirements, we can supply you with the most versatile and robust face rigs within your budgetary constraints.
We offer wrinkle map creation to compliment and support your facial rig. Wrinkle maps are maps activated in conjunction with blend shapes to create more defined and realistic wrinkle definition. Depending on the performance of your chosen character, we can customize the number of wrinkle
maps required to suit your needs and the facial rig.
Whether you require body rigging for a human, animal or mythical creature, we can provide you with a robust and versatile rig for your production needs. Our impressive muscle system will show off the physique of your character, which will hold up under the most extreme poses.
